How Many of These Have You Made?

15,365 of our camouflage quilts have been made and distributed to our troops! That's a lot of our brave men and women that now have a bit of comfort during their deployment and have been encouraged knowing that people "back home" have not forgotten them. Each quilt takes about 3 hours to make so that is at least 46,095 volunteer hours!

We currently have about 400 quilts ordered and need your help to get these quilts made and sent as soon as possible. More volunteers are needed to make the quilts and more contributions are needed to cover the cost of the fabric and batting. Your involvement either by volunteering time or with financial contributions is greatly appreciated.

Janome Sewing Machines - We are looking for heavy duty machines with a top loading, jam free, bobbin. The Janome Memory Craft6600 with the built in walking foot is amazing! We have several at our facility in Plymouth, but could use several more for our satellite facilities in Milwaukee, Janesville, Fredonia, West Bend and Mayville.

Warm & Natural Batting - 100% Cotton. A 40yd bolt of 45" wide costs about $100 plus shipping costs. One bolt is enough for 20 quilts. We use over 24 bolts a month!

NBC News has advised us that they will NOT be airing the segment on the Camo Quilt Project. They have, however, posted the report on their website and have released the report to their affiliates. CQP - Benefit Dinner a Success!

The Chicken & Beef Tips dinner that was held at Laack's Hall on November 17, 2011 was a big success. We served 457 people. A special THANK YOU to the 14 National Honor Society members from Plymouth Middle School who helped serve our guests beverages and bussed tables for us. We also thank the kitchen staff at Laack's Hall for preparing delicious food and having everything so well organized.

Besides the dinner, we had a Silent Auction, a Bucket Raffle, 50/50 raffles and 12 Bottles of Kessler's were raffled off.

SOLDIER GIVES A PERSONAL THANKS

Nothing motivates our volunteers more than having someone who received a camo quilt stop into our workshop to say thank you. This happened a couple months ago. LTC Robert Grierson and his family were travelling from their home town, Dubuque IA, to vacation in northern WI. Their travel plans included stopping in Plymouth WI to visit the Camo Quilt Project. Robert and his family happened to stop in just as Linda Wieck was leaving for the day. Linda invited them in and The Grierson Family was given a grand tour of the workshop. LTC Grierson was especially thankful for receiving his quilt while serving in Afghanistan. He told Linda, "It was the only piece of bedding I had for half my tour". Hugs, tears and thank yous were shared before this special family were on their way again.

Although the Griersons arrived at the Camo Quilt Project after the volunteers had left for the day, Linda was sure to let our volunteers know they came and how grateful LTC Grierson was to have a camo quilt. Having that visit is really an encouragement to keep on cutting, sewing and sending the quilts to our young men and women serving in the Middle East.

CQP - Award Winning!

The Camo Quilt Project has received the Make A Difference Day award. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Thanks to Connie Nelson, a volunteer from the Milwaukee Area CQP, we registered to be part of this great event. CQP volunteers working in 4 states completed about 130 quilts on October 23, 2010. We also registered to be considered for a $10,000 Make A Difference Day Award from Newman's Own---and WE WON! The award is given to 10 projects who participate in MADD.

This award comes at just the perfect time---when we have been very short on funds. Lately the CQP has had to delay purchasing batting until enough donations came in. $10,000 sounds like a lot of money (and it is!) but each month the project needs about $10,000-$12,000 to purchase the fabric, batting and other supplies needed to make the quilts.

Winning this award is a great honor for the CQP volunteers. We ARE making a difference in the lives of our military. Even though we cannot give a quilt to everyone in the armed services (we only give them to those deployed in the Middle East), our military personnel will hear about the project and know we care. That is what we are about---WE CARE and SUPPORT our military. God bless you all.

Fundraising Event a Success!

Our first fund raising event, a Chicken and Tips Dinner, sponsored by Laack's Hall in Johnsonville was a big success. Over 500 were served! The proceeds from the dinner and raffles was $4,200. Numbers from from the NO DINNER tickets are not yet available. We are VERY pleased with the results and the profits came at just the right time. Our fabric supplier just informed us he has 2,000 yards of the army waterproof fabric and this fabric was being discontinued. Having the proceeds in hand enabled us to purchase all 2,000 yards. This sounds like a LOT of fabric---and it is, but with making over 500 quilts a month this is just a 2 month supply.

For those of you who are out of town, and even out of state you can still be part of this fund raiser by purchasing a NO DINNER ticket. Simply purchase your NO DINNER ticket by sending a contribution for the Camo Quilt Project. Indicate it is for a NO DINNER ticket. See the side bar for information on how to make a contribution.

Shout Out to M.A.S Industries

Thank you to M.A.S. Industries in Plymouth WI for their donation to the Camo Quilt Project making it possible for us to get a 3' x 5' Banner of our logo. The banner will be attached to our building (until the time we have an actual sign) and it will be used at CQP functions such as the Chicken and Tips fundraising dinner and in parades. Besides the banner, we also were able to get 15 signs that show our logo and WORKSHOP TODAY. These will be used at the various off-site workshops that are held. Having the banner and signs will make it so much easier for volunteers to find us. Please take time to click on the M.A.S. logo and send a note of thanks to them.

Special Request for 7 Replacement Quilts

The CQP made 14 quilts for the 911th FST that deployed to Iraq in May. On 10/08/201 we received the following email:

"Dear Linda, You are the wonderful organization who supplied quilts for our 14 member unit that deployed to Iraq in May. We have cherished them and all use them. Unfortunately, seven of our members lost all of their personal belongings when their sleep tent was hit by enemy mortar fire about a month ago....inclusive of the quilts you all hand made them. They are saddened by the loss of these quilts. I am wondering, Linda, if you could make these quilts for these seven members again and ship them to them. I know it is alot to ask and you have been so generous to us. But it would mean so much to these people to boost their morale and give them back some very good memories. I have a list of the names and their address of the base they are stationed at. They are in a very very remote austere environment and would truly appreciate that touch from home."

It saddens us that these 7 soldiers have suffered such a loss, but we are thankful that they were able to reach safety and were not injured. Although we have over 1000 quilts on order, we want to do what we can to make new quilts for these 7 soldiers and to get them sent to Iraq ASAP. Cost to make them would be about $140 and it would cost another $25-$50 to send them to Iraq. There are already several volunteers who have said they would work extra hours to help make the quilts. If you would like to help cover the cost of these quilts please let us know.

Orders, Orders and more Orders!

No, I am not talking about the military orders our young men and women in the service receive. I am talking about orders for camo quilts. Right now we have about 1100 quilts that have been ordered and need to be made. It is a bit overwhelming---but our volunteers are working hard to complete the orders. Wouldn't YOU like to be one of our volunteers?

Where do the orders come from? A parent might request a quilt for their son or daughter. Sometimes it is a grandparent or other relative that orders the quilt. Orders have also been received directly from Iraq or Afghanistan. It might be a commander ordering a quilt for the entire unit or it could come from an individual who received a quilt who then orders one for the rest of the unit. An order may be for 1 quilt going to an individual or it could be an order for anywhere from 20 to 200 depending on the size of a unit.

With all the publicity the Camo Quilt Project (CQP) has had lately, the orders are rolling in---now we just need more volunteers to come and join us in making the quilts.

How much does a Camo Quilt Cost?

The quilts are given to our troops free of charge. If you would like to donate money for a quilt, it costs $25 for the materials to make a quilt. Those who request the quilts pay any shipping charges to send the quilt to their soldier/marine/airman. Besides the cost of the quilt, it takes 3-5 hours to complete each quilt depending on the experience of the volunteer. Here is the break-down of the various tasks: 10 mins for pinning; 10 mins to zigzag 2 vertical rows; 30-60 mins to do the quilting, 10 mins to press 4 ties & 1 binding (7 yds); 45-90 mins to bind the quilt and 15-30 mins for miscellaneous tasks such as cutting, winding bobbins, trimming quilt, cleaning up, inserting card/brochure/cool-tie and rolling the quilt. Of course, the time to make a quilt at the shop depends on how much "chatting" goes on among the volunteers. :)

Milwaukee Area CQP

The Camo Quilt Project has a facility in the Milwaukee area where volunteers can come and work on the quilts. Pilgrim Lutheran Church has offered us use of a large classroom in their Ministry Center (former school). A group of LWML (Lutheran Women Missionary League) women are overseeing the project. The Camo Quilt room is set up with 14 sewing stations, pinning table, trimming table and a pressing area. Thanks to a donation given by the American Legion Aux Unit 416, Greendale WI, and from National Mutual Benefits, 6 new Janome sewing machines were purchased along with other items needed for the project. There are also a few older sewing machines for you to use. If you prefer, you can bring your own sewing machine. Look under "Pages" in the side bar for the workshop hours.

How to Order a Quilt

If you would like to order a quilt for armed forces deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, email Linda at linda.camoquilt@gmail.com, or call her at 920-627-3460. The quilt is a GIFT of appreciation, however, we do ask to be reimbursed for the cost of shipping. When ordering a quilt, please provide the following information:

Name of the serviceman ( if ordering for a unit, the name of the unit and # of quilts needed)
Area of deployment (If not yet deployed -- the expected date of deployment)
Branch of service (Army, Air Force, Marine, if Navy, the branch they are serving with)
Shipping address. (We will let you know what it cost for shipping so you can reimburse us)
Contact person - who to contact when the order is shipped so we can advise them of the cost of shipping. Approximate cost is $10 if a single quilt is shipped. If 10 quilts or more are shipped the approximate cost is $3 per quilt.

Keep in mind that we often have a backlog of orders, so it may be 6-12 weeks before we can fill an order. Orders are usually completed on a first come, first served basis.

Quilt Kits are also available for those who want to make a camo quilt to be given to a family member or friend who is deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Kits include pre-cut fabric for the quilt and cool-tie and instructions for sewing them. Kits are free of charge, but we ask that postage be reimbursed. Please specify that you want a kit to sew when you place your order. Also specify if you want us to send the batting or if you will purchase the 100% Warm & Natural batting yourself (2 yds of 45").

ADJUSTABLE CHAIRS---YEAH!!!!!

Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Camo Quilt Project (CQP) now has 20 "gently used" office chairs---and they all are fully adjustable. No more sitting on folded quilts to adjust your seat height! These chairs are so comfortable that our volunteers won't even notice how long they have been sitting. Productivity will be on the rise and our volunteers will now have happy faces AND happy behinds!

Amy's Quilts

Before her death in the Fort Hood massacre, SSG Amy Krueger had requested quilts for her entire unit. We were able to complete these quilts, and thanks to a local company they were delivered to Fort Hood before the unit deployed. We received this note of thanks from MAJ Suttinger:

What a wonderful gift. Notice the smiles all around. We are all very touched and astonished at Amy’s wish and the entire dedicated effort it took for the Camo Quilt Project to make this work (along with some help from Johnsonville for delivery!) We were shocked to hear the news about the Fort Hood massacre. A few days later we learned that one of our quilt recipients, Ssgt Amy Krueger, was one of the soldiers that were killed. In September Amy received one of our quilts and on September 29th we received this email from her:

"My name is Sgt. Krueger. I am with the 467th Combat Stress Control Unit that will be deploying within the next two months. I recently received a blanket because a family member knows some of the women that volunteer their time to make these blankets. I personally want to thank you and all the women who worked diligently to make my blanket. It is a very gracious gift that will be very very useful. Also, on the behalf of my commander, Maj. Suttinger, as a unit we were wondering if we could request more blankets for the rest of the unit? We will be state side till approximately the beginning of December. I am not sure if it would be possible to make 45 blankets before then or what the capabilities are, but we thought it was worth asking. Again thanks to all that are
involved in this wonderful project!!"

We have been in contact with Amy's commander and the quilts ordered by Amy will be made. These quilts will be a bit special in that a ribbon will be attached and a specially designed card sent with the quilt that tells Amy's comrades that the quilt is being given in her honor.

Cutting Fabric

Cutting 40 layers of ACU fabric is easy with the use of the electric rotary cutting saw! The fabric comes on rolls from 20 to 100 yds each. The width is about 66 inches. The fabric is layered onto our cutting table and the first cut is made at 45". After the initial cut to width, the fabric is then cut to 72" lengths. The 21" cut-off is set aside to be cut into bindings, ties, cool-ties and it is also used to piece together additional 45 x 72 inch quilt pieces. We have been using the saw for almost a year now and we are still on the first blade. Pretty impressive since it has cut pieces for more than 1200 quilts!

New Sewing Machine

Our new (refurbished) Janome 11574 was delivered today and both Linda & Diane could hardly wait to try it out. It worked beautifully--smooth and quiet AND it sewed fast enough to keep us happy. This refurbished machine only cost $115 including shipping. No, we did not use any donations given for the quilts. What we did use was the "extra" money put into the "beverage donation jar". Thanks to generous donations from volunteers for their soda, coffee or water, we collected enough to purchase the sewing machine. Our troops deserve the best. That is why our quilts are filled with 100% cotton batting. We use the Warm & Natural batting made by The Warm Company. In June The Warm Company donated 3 rolls of batting, 124" by 25 yds each. That was enough to fill 85 quilts! THANK YOU to The Warm Company.

Spc Timothy Schmid watches a quilt being sewn at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Watertown WI. Even a snowstorm did not stop the 20 women who came to learn how to make the camo quilts! Tim, his wife Sara and their baby, Jayln came to pick up 10 quilts. An additional 110 quilts have been completed for Tim's unit, the 1158th Transportation Co of Beloit, WI. This unit will be deploying to Iraq soon.

What On Earth is a "Camo Quilt?"

One of our most-asked questions is, “Doesn’t the military provide them with a quilt?” The answer, sadly, is no. Military-issued sleeping bags are bulky and hot and must be carried inside their back-packs. Our Camo Quilt is so popular because it's made from the same camouflage material as the uniforms. That means it can be used in the open, tied to the outside of a soldier's kit, leaving precious room inside for personal items.

The camouflage quilt is a small quilt measuring approximately 45” x 72”. The quilt folds in thirds and rolls up like a sleeping bag. It is lightweight and has cotton batting so it breathes better in the extreme heat. These quilts are slept on and slept under; they protect the soldiers from the harsh elements they face, both cold winter nights and hot daytime sun. They are even used for pillows. Any person serving in the military and deployed to the Middle East is eligible to receive one of these quilts!

Each quilt is packaged with a cool tie and a hand-made card. The card gives information about the volunteer group and is signed by some of the volunteers. This gives our quilts a very personal touch! There is no charge to the soldiers for the quilts. We just ask that the person requesting the quilts cover the cost of shipping.

The Camo Quilt Story.

The first camouflage quilt was designed and made by Linda Wieck in April of 2006. Her son-in-law, Todd, was being deployed to Iraq and asked her to make him a quilt to take along. His specifications were that it be small, made from camouflage cloth, and it needed to have cotton batting.

While Todd was at Camp Shelby, MS for training prior to being deployed, other soldiers in his unit saw the quilt and wanted to buy one. Todd asked Linda if she could make each of them a quilt and they would pay her for them. She scrambled to finish all 48 before they left for Iraq in July of 2006.

After the local newspaper published an article about her work, one of the readers asked Linda to conduct a workshop to train others to make the quilts. The first one day workshop was held in April of 2007 at a local banquet hall and was fol-lowed by 3 additional week-long work-shops. Hundreds of volunteers helped at these workshops. All the money needed for materials and supplies were donated so the quilts could be given to the soldiers free of charge.

As the need for more quilts grew it became clear that an occasional week-long workshop wasn’t going to be enough to keep the orders filled. We needed a large, ongoing source of committed volunteers to sew quilts. One of Linda’s volunteers is a Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) member and felt that LWML could help meet that need!

At the South Wisconsin District (SWD) Lutheran Womens Missionary League Fall Retreat, the Camo Quilt Project was presented as an LWML Human Care project.

In order for us to move forward with our project and produce a larger number of quilts, we needed to have a suitable facility where we could permanently set up a workshop. At minimum we needed a warehouse to receive and store the large bolts of cloth (up to 400 yards!)

The 200 LWMLers brought it before the Lord in prayer and God answered that prayer the following week. Glacier Transit and Storage-GTS of Plymouth WI donated a facility for our use. Not only is there a loading dock and storage space but we have an entire facility large enough to set up a dozen sewing machines with a separate room for cutting . GTS has donated this area for as long as we need it including the heat and electricity. Praise God for His wonderful provision!
